Asdrubal Cabrera is meeting his new Met teammates.

PORT ST. LUCIE — It began with a handshake. The Mets’ new middle infield met for the first time Monday morning when shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera arrived at Tradition Field to begin workouts. New Mets second baseman Neil Walker walked over and introduced himself and the double-play partners are set to get to work.

“Not that much,” Cabrera said when asked how much work it will take to learn to play with Walker. “He’s a really good second baseman. We’re going to be fine; we’ll work on that.”

Cabrera was introducing himself around the Mets clubhouse Monday morning, knowing just a few of his new teammates. The ones he was all too familiar with and eager to meet were the Mets’ young starting pitchers. They left a real impression on him from his time playing with the Nationals in 2013.

“They are really good. When I am on that (other) side, I thought, ‘It would be fun to play with them rather than against them,’ ” Cabrera said with a laugh. “They are really young and good too.”

The 30-year-old two-time All Star also got a good look at the rotation he will be playing behind during the Mets run to the World Series in 2015. He said he enjoyed watching the Mets in the playoffs and it was one of the reasons he signed the two-year deal to come here.

“They are really good guys, a good team, they work together. They got really good year last year and that is good motivation to keep working hard, keep working together like a team,” Cabrera said. “So, I come here to try to help the team win again and get to the World Series again.”
