Report: Dubai, Saturday

Meydan: Al Quoz Sprint (Group 1) 5f, turf, 3yo+

THE brilliant Buffering proved his high-class Australian form could translate to success on the global stage with a typically gutsy victory in a strong renewal of the Al Quoz Sprint.

The eight-year-old, one of the last remaining links to the dominant era of Black Caviar having been defeated by the superstar mare on several occasions, was straight to the head of affairs at Meydan.

The challengers lined up around Buffering as the field converged in the closing stages but as he has so many times before, the veteran found plenty to notch a career-defining victory.

Ertijaal, sent off the 11-4 favourite, was forced to make do with second place while Peniaphobia, now based in Hong Kong having formerly been trained in Britain by Richard Fahey, took third.

Royal Ascot on the radar

Buffering’s victory, his seventh at Group 1 level, sparked wild scenes of celebration among his travelling connections, who are planning to continue globetrotting with their Queensland-based star.

The Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize at Sha Tin in Hong Kong on May 1 looks likely to be the next target, with a trip to Britain also under consideration.

“He only had to turn up with his A-Game for you all to see what a warrior he is,” said delighted trainer Robert Heathcote.

He added: “To win on the world stage, wow, what a buzz. We Aussies like a drink and we’ll have plenty of them tonight, that’s for sure!

“I’m so proud of the horse. He’s done it for Australia. We’ll go to Hong Kong, win that and then possibly push on to Ascot. I’d love to meet the Queen.”

No Power from Sole

Last year’s winner Sole Power set a new record when lining up for the race, becoming the only horse to compete at six Dubai World Cup meetings.

Unfortunately for the Eddie Lynam-trained veteran, his trademark late turn of foot was absent as he weakened to finish down the field.

Meydan: Dubai Golden Shaheen (Group 1) 6f, dirt, 3yo+

MUARRAB got the better of a thrilling dual with America’s X Y Jet to post a local victory in the Golden Shaheen.

The former Ed Dunlop-trained son of Oasis Dream ranged up alongside long-time leader X Y Jet upon straightening, with neither willing to give an inch.

They raced stride for stride for much of the home straight before Muarrab, under Paul Hanagan, stretched out his neck to get the better of the American raider close home.

Morawij took third a long way adrift, with the popular Dubai Carnival veteran Reynaldothewizard claiming fourth.
