Cam Newton is having a career year and finds himself as the most dangerous quarterback in the league entering the Super Bowl.

The Broncos just beat one of the best quarterbacks of all time in the AFC Championship Game. And now they’re going to face Cam Newton, who, at least according to Aqib Talib, is playing even better.

“He’s probably the most dangerous quarterback in the NFL right now,” Talib said of Newton on Monday, a day after the Broncos and Panthers each earned wins to pit them against each other in Super Bowl 50.

Newton, of course, is coming off of a stellar season and already has the Pro Football Writers of America MVP award in his trophy case. And that was before he and his Panthers put a 49-15 beat down on the Cardinals that included two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns from Newton. So, Talib’s statement was hardly controversial.

“He’s throwing the ball amazing right now, and then you know what he can do with his legs,” Talib said. “He’s the best of both worlds.”

Newton, who is both large and mobile, obviously presents different challenges than, for instance, Brady. Talib described Newton as “super unique” when asked if he could compare him to another quarterback.

“I’ve never seen anybody who is that size… (He) can sit in the pocket and throw it, and then (he) can run, run wide out,” Talib said. “(He) probably could play any position in the NFL that (he) wanted to.”

Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak noted Monday that Denver hadn’t faced someone that was as dangerous with both their legs and their arm, like Newton, all year.

“I don’t know that we’ve faced the dual-threat guy like him this year with our schedule,” Kubiak said. I saw him first-hand last year. We played him last year when I was in Baltimore. It’ll be different for us. Having to tackle him out in the open field, having to defend the quarterback runs and those types of things will be something different for us. It’s nice to have a couple of weeks (to prepare).”

Fortunately for the Broncos, they have the top-ranked defense that is red-hot. The defensive wizardry that Denver put together in their 20-18 win over the Patriots on Sunday in Denver is what earned them the victory.

“It was special,” Kubiak said of defensive coordinator’s Wade Phillips’ game plan against the Patriots. “The players, I mean you go across the board-we talk the morning after the game about players of the game and stuff. We couldn’t pick a guy. We played great defense.”

The biggest component of that on Sunday was the pass rush, which kept Brady on edge throughout the contest. They hit Brady 20 times, and they clearly were able to affect the future Hall of Famer’s passes.

Against Newton, the Broncos will have to be conscious of the Panthers’ quarterback’s mobility. But DeMarcus Ware, who was part of that ferocious pass rush on Sunday, said they shouldn’t change what they do too much.

“I think it’s the same type of pass rush,” Ware said. “You can’t rush timid because if you do that, he’s one of those pocket quarterbacks that can get the ball deep down the field. You have to be able to get pressure on him, but you have to be decisive on how you’re rushing.”
