Brett Gardner excited after testing wrist in sim game

[ad_1]

TAMPA — Brett Gardner has been longing for his first spring at-bats. Sunday, he got nine of them.

Gardner participated in a simulated game before the Yankees hosted the Phillies, giving his banged up left wrist one final test before he makes his spring debut, currently set for Wednesday.

“I was excited about the way it felt,” said Gardner, who has been slowed by a bone bruise in the wrist he suffered during last October’s wild card game. “I saw a lot of pitches, got a lot of swings in and we’ll go from there. I think I’m supposed to be in a game sometime in the middle of next week so I’m excited to get back out there and face some velocity.”

Gardner had been taking batting practice for about a week, though he had yet to see anything resembling game-speed pitching prior to Sunday’s sim game.

“When you take normal BP and when you hit in the cage, everything is very controlled,” Gardner said. “You don’t swing and miss, really. You don’t foul balls off. As much as you try to do things at 100 percent, it’s hard to really turn it up until you actually get in a game situation like this. I know this isn’t a real game but it’s pretty darn close to a real game. I was very pleased with the way I felt today.”

Gardner’s only issue with Sunday’s exercise? Pitching coach Larry Rothschild acted as the umpire.

“(His) strike zone? High, low, wide,” Gardner said. “Everything.”

Gardner said it’s “reasonable” to expect his debut to come Wednesday, provided that his wrist feels good on Monday and Tuesday.
