Suzie Bates put in a stellar all-round display as Southern Vipers secured the inaugural Women’s Super League with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Western Storm in Chelmsford.

Bates hit 52 off 46 balls, adding 78 for the first wicket with former England captain Charlotte Edwards, before Sara McGlashan and Lydia Greenway overcame a mini-wobble to knock off the target with seven balls to spare.

Western Storm’s 140 for 5 had been centred around Rachel Priest‘s 57 but when she and Stafanie Taylor added 74 for the first wicket inside 11 overs Storm looked on course for a more substantial total

However, Arran Brindle claimed 2 for 15 in her four overs – the scalps being key wickets of Taylor and Heather Knight – while Bates removed fellow New Zealander Priest which meant the middle order were left needing to finish the innings.
