CH’TIBELLO gave trainer Dan Skelton another big-race success with a decisive victory in the Scottish Champion Hurdle.

Cloudy Dream was a fast-finishing second ahead of Clondaw Warrior, who gave Willie Mullins some more prize-money in his quest for the British trainers’ championship.

Skelton needs only one more winner for a first century after 8-1 shot Ch’Tibello scored by a length and a quarter under the trainer’s brother Harry, who is also on the verge of reaching three figures for the season.

Cloudy Dream (15-2) did not get a clear run going to the last and was closest at the finish in second, with another length and a quarter back to Clondaw Warrior (7-2). The Mullins-trained 11-4 favourite Ivan Grozny was fifth having been unable to threaten after being held up.

Off a good pace set by Sternrubin and Zamdy Man, the field was closely bunched at the top of the straight but after the third-last hurdle was omitted owing to damage Skelton made sure he was quick to take the initiative and his move proved decisive.

Ch’Tibello took it up after two out and even a mistake at the last could not stop him, with Cloudy Dream getting going too late and the rest unable to reel in the winner.

Dan Skelton said: “We’ve taken the brave man’s route with him. He needs good ground, so we put him away to wait for this race. The ground was a bit patchy, so conditions weren’t ideal.

“I was busting to send him chasing but we’ll put that on hold for now. The Swinton is a possibility, the strongly run race there will be ideal for him, but he won’t go to Galway.”

Century up for Skelton

Dan Skelton made it 100 for the season when Two Taffs landed the staying handicap hurdle later on the card.

He said: “It’s magic. I’m delighted, everyone at home has worked really hard and they deserve it as well. There’s been a lot of miles travelled often in bad weather and it has been a great season.”
