Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman says Tuesday that he feels like he’s been treated unfairly by the media following his alleged domestic violence issues.

TAMPA — Aroldis Chapman said Tuesday his excused absence from camp the previous day had nothing to do with the domestic violence allegations being investigated by Major League Baseball

“No, not at all,” Chapman said through Yankees translator Marlon Abreu. “I was home (in Miami), taking care of some personal things. … It’s a family matter.”

Commissioner Rob Manfred’s ruling on a possible suspension for Chapman could come at any moment, but the reliever has no idea when to expect the decision. He reiterated his plan to file an appeal if he is suspended, though he has not yet reached out to the MLB players association regarding a potential appeal.

“If it doesn’t go my way, I’m just going to appeal; I haven’t hurt anybody,” Chapman said. “In general, I never hurt anybody. Never in my life.”

Asked whether he believes he has been portrayed unfairly since the alleged incident, Chapman said yes.

“Just a little bit,” Chapman said. “That’s not my character or the person I am.”

The Yankees’ acquisition of Chapman has been met with mixed reaction from the Yankees’ fan base. Social media users have been split on the subject, some questioning why the Yankees would trade for a player accused of domestic violence, others noting that he isn’t being charged with a crime and should not face suspension.

Chapman hasn’t heard much from fans thus far during spring training, though crowds for pitchers and catchers workouts can be sparse. Is he concerned about the reaction once he begins pitching in packed Florida ballparks?

“No,” he said. “I just focus on my work.”
