Andy Bathgate, seen here in 1959 accepting NHL MVP award, died on Friday. He was 83.

One of the greatest Rangers of all time has passed away.

Hall of Fame right wing Andy Bathgate, whose number “9” jersey hangs in the Garden rafters, died on Friday at the age of 83. The Hockey Hall of Fame announced Bathgate’s passing and the Rangers confirmed the news on Twitter, sending their thoughts to his wife, Merle, and his family.

Bathgate played for the Rangers from 1952 through 1964, capturing the NHL’s Hart Trophy as league MVP in 1958-59 when he became the first Rangers player ever to score 40 goals in a season. He was an eight-time All-Star and captained the Blueshirts from 1961 until he was traded to Toronto on Feb. 22, 1964.

When Bathgate left the rangers, he was the owner of every major team scoring record. His record-setting stretch of goals in 10 straight games (11 goals) during the 1962-63 season still stands today.

The Rangers retired his jersey on Feb. 22, 2009. He is one of two Rangers who have had the No. 9 retired in their honor, since Adam Graves wore the same number prior to Bathgate’s ceremony and also earned a place on the franchise’s ring of honor.
