Forget Hack-a-Shaq, Attack-an-Andre is the new late-game technique in NBA games.

The Rockets sent the Pistons star to the line 36 times Wednesday night and, at first glance, it worked: Drummond set a new record for free-throw futility by missing 23 shots from the stripe.

But, the Pistons still won the game, 123-114.

The tactic allowed the Rockets to take a lead in the third quarter when they did it 12 straight times — including five times in nine seconds by K.J. McDaniels to begin the quarter — but it didn’t help them close the gap in the fourth when Drummond went out for good with 5 1/2 minutes left after getting hacked seven times in the quarter and Detroit leading 107-94.

“It didn’t work,” interim Rockets coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “That’s it. That’s all I have to say about that.”

Drummond, a dreadful free-throw shooter — he’s shooting a career-worst 35 percent this season — didn’t think much of Houston’s strategy or of breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s record for the most misses in a game.

“We won the game today,” he said when asked about the record.

Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy was more talkative on the topic, questioning NBA commissioner Adam Silver for not outlawing the strategy.

“That’s the game the league wants, so that’s what fans get to watch,” Van Gundy said.

“It wasn’t a chess match, it was just they wanted to foul and we let them foul,” he added.

Silver, on ESPN’s “Mike and Mike” Thursday morning, said the league has no plans to change its rules because of one player.

Drummond’s 36 trips to the stripe set a career high and a franchise record on a night where he was intentionally fouled 21 times. The previous record for most misses was 22, set by Wilt Chamberlain on Dec. 1, 1967 when he went 8-for-30 from the line. Drummond’s 36 attempts were third-most in league history, behind two 39-attempt games by Dwight Howard. On average, Drummond goes to the line eight times a night.

It was bad, but he says he’s working on it.

“I’m not going to miss them all,” said Drummond, who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. “I’ve worked on it enough where I’m going to build a rhythm and over time I ended up getting one.”
