A POTENTIAL all-weather gamble on Shane Kelly’s rides spread between Southwell and Kempton today took an interesting twist as the first runner, Feeltherhythm, was withdrawn at the start.

The five-year-old was due to take part in the 2m handicap, but was withdrawn on veterinary advice. An eight-race maiden, Feeltherhythm was 11-2 earlier but was backed into as short as 6-4, and was a 5-2 chance prior to being scratched.

Kelly said before he dashed off to Kempton: “She wasn’t kicked but she was lame.”

Starter Stuart Turner said: “She was lame on her near fore and was withdrawn on veterinary advice.”

She was the 5-2 second favourite at the time so her withdrawal resulted in a deduction of 25p in the pound from all bets and also reduced to number of places for each-way and Placepot punters from three to two.

Kelly also partners the other three gambled runners at Kempton this evening.

Kelly rode two of the four winners in a Barney Curley-inspired coup in 2014, and Feeltherhythm is trained by Des Donovan, a former employee of the now-retired Curley.

Curley used to train Seven Summits  who runs in the 5.25. The nine-year-old has not run since March last year when hurdling at Fakenham, and has not been on the Flat since May 2013.

Seven Summits was one of the winners in the previous coup, and joined  Sophie Leech in 2013. Now favourite at 7-4, Seven Summits was an 11-2 shot.

Next is Miss Phillyjinks in the 5.55. The three-year-old has been partnered by Kelly both times since she joined Paul D’Arcy from Ireland, winning in December at Wolverhampton. She is the 2-1 favourite for the 5f handicap from as big as 6-1.

Finally, in what could either be a devastating final blow to the bookies, or a limp ending if the other three runners disappoint, handicap debutant Highwayman is vying for favouritism in the 7.55 at around 2-1 from as big as 8-1.

Kelly rode Highwayman all three times last season, with the then juvenile failing to make an impact in three maidens.

Commenting on the movers, William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke said: “All four of Shane Kelly’s mounts have been incredibly well-backed and have been slashed as a consequence. This could be exactly what we don’t need before Cheltenham.”
