TAMPA – Alex Rodriguez clarified his whole retirement plan Thursday, telling reporters at Steinbrenner Field that there isn’t really a plan at all.

A-Rod acknowledged that his quote to ESPN.com Wednesday that he would retire after the 2017 season represented the way he feels about the situation at the moment, but just as he told the Daily News hours after his initial comment, nothing is set in stone.

“It was dead accurate,” Rodriguez said of his quote to the web site. “That’s exactly how I felt. I feel that right now, but I do have the right in 24 months to (change my mind).

“At the end of the day, he asked me a question and I answered it. Last year, 12 months ago we were standing here wondering if I was going to make the team. In baseball, 30 days is an eternity. I can’t tell you what’s going to happen in two years. I have a commitment, I’m going to fulfill my contract and I have the right to make a decision then, too.”

BROADCASTING CAREER BECKONS FOR A-ROD

Rodriguez addressed reporters for five minutes before Thursday night’s game against the Rays, making it clear that while retirement is a strong possibility after he fulfills the final two years of his 10-year, $275 million contract with the Yankees, there’s also a chance that he reconsiders.

“First of all, I don’t think there’s a plan,” Rodriguez said. “There is no plan. I have a contract and I’m going to fulfill that commitment. The only plan I have is to play baseball right now. Again, I’m 40 years old. I’ve had two hip surgeries. At my age, I’m day-to-day.

“I’m really just focusing on the next 30 days; Opening Day, this year. We have a really good team. We have some unfinished business. We’re going to go from there.”

Asked whether the pursuit of Barry Bonds’ all-time home run record might be enough to push him to play in 2018, A-Rod said that was way too far off to think about.

“Those are such hypotheticals,” he said. “Last year at this time, I was working my butt off to make this team. I had a great year, I’ve worked really hard, I’m strong and healthy and I feel great. I love this team. I just want to be a contributing member and be a big bat in the middle of the lineup.”
