BARRY GERAGHTY has been ruled out of the Punchestown festival with a 30-day ban for his ride on Noble Emperor at Limerick.

The horse has been banned for 60 days and trainer Tony Martin has been fined €3,000.

The 7-4 favourite in the 2m handicap hurdle, trained by Tony Martin, never got to tabs with runaway winner Velocity Boy, ridden by Barry Cash. All the riders in the race apart from Cash were interviewed by the stewards.

However, only Noble Emperor and Geraghty received any punishment, with the stewards noting the explanations of the other riders and trainers or their representatives, apart from Robbie Colgan, who had left the track.

Steward Michael O’Donoghue said: “All horses bar the winner were involved in a running and riding inquiry. Noble Emperor was done under Rule 212, not allowing a horse to run on his merits.

“The trainer was fined €3,000. The horse got 60 days, the rider got 30 days and forfeited his riding fees.”

Velocity Boy afforded 20-length lead

A clearly shocked and angry Barry Geraghty chose not to be quoted with regard to his 30-day ban. He is almost certain to appeal.

Barry Cash was afforded a big lead on the 2-1 shot Velocity Boy, with Geraghty sat in the pack some 20-lengths adrift. Jumping the last in the back straight Geraghty moved into third and moved into second approaching the second last.

Geraghty attempted to close on the leader but could only get within 11 lengths on the 7-4 favourite, pulling 15 lengths clear of the horse in third Cliff House.

‘Riding strictly to instructions’

The Turf Club report said: “Tony Martin stated that his instructions were to get some cover and try switch him off, bearing in mind that the horse can be keen.

“He added that the horse has disappointed in the past but should have enjoyed today’s heavy conditions over two miles, despite having form over further. He expressed satisfaction with the ride and that the lost shoe had no bearing on the run on today’s ground.

“Evidence was also heard from Barry Geraghty, who confirmed the instructions – adding that the horse needs to be covered up and delivered late. He added that the winner quickly established a good lead at the start and circumstance meant that he was unable to chase the leader until the straight as he was riding strictly to instructions. He confirmed that the horse felt healthy at all stages.

“The stewards also received a report from the Turf Club veterinary officer who stated that Noble Emperor was post race normal, having lost a left fore shoe.”
