MUSSELBURGH has announced it has been forced to cancel its  Good Friday card on March 25 due to problems with the turf.

After a recent trial gallop on the new turf laid down at the track last summer the ground was deemed too soft, following what was the area’s wettest winter on record. With an indifferent forecast for the coming week, officials made the early call to scrap the fixture, which leaves just the all-weather championship finals card at Lingfield slated for Friday week – though the BHA will seek to stage a replacement meeting.

Musselburgh general manager Bill Farnsworth said on Monday: “The re-cambering work completed last July was very successful and went better than was planned, but we have since had the wettest winter I can recall. The ground needs to dry out and tighten up and unfortunately, while the rest of the country will enjoy warm spring weather in the week ahead, we’re due to be blanketed by low cloud, fog and lower temperatures.

“We could have taken a gamble but felt the risk of having to abandon nearer the meeting, or possibly on the day itself if we had rain, was just too high.”

BHA spokesman Robin Mounsey said: “We’re looking into alternative options for replacing Musselburgh’s high-value card, whilst being mindful of other events taking place that day, including the all-weather championships fixture at Lingfield and the Lambourn open day.

“We’re appreciative of the early decision made my Musselburgh as it provides us with the scope to speak to racecourses and assess the options.”
