Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones pleads his case during Bengals’ AFC wild card loss to the Steelers.

The Jets cut one veteran cornerback, Antonio Cromartie, last month, but now they are taking a look at another one. The Jets have expressed some level of interest in Bengals veteran cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones, according to a source. Jones is set to become a free agent on Wednesday when the new league year begins.

That the Jets are looking at someone like Jones, 32, is somewhat surprising given their tight cap situation and needs at other positions. However, it’s possible they just were kicking the tires on Jones as a lower-priority free agent or are just trying to gauge the cornerback market.

ProFootballTalk reported Tuesday that there are at least six other teams interested in Jones, however. The combination of the Jets’ budget and the other interest in Jones means that it is probably still unlikely the cornerback ends up with Gang Green.

Gang Green’s first priorities in free agency will likely be re-signing players like Ryan Fitzpatrick and Damon Harrison, if they can. Even if they manage to bring back both of those players, the team still will have needs at outside linebacker, inside linebacker, running back and guard.

Once Cromartie was cut, head coach Todd Bowles said the team will have an open competition for the No. 2 cornerback spot between Marcus Williams, Buster Skrine and Dee Milliner. Obviously, Darrelle Revis is the team’s top cornerback.

Jones started 14 games for the Bengals last season and grabbed three picks but the lasting image of his year will will be the penalty he drew late in the Bengals’ playoff loss to the Steelers when the cornerback made contact with an official after getting upset with Pittsburgh assistant Joey Porter. That flag moved the Steelers into field goal range to win the game. Jones was and Porter were both fined for the incident.

But Jones is also known for off-field incidents which, especially early on, plagued his career. The most notable of those was being related to a shooting in a Las Vegas strip club in 2007 that left one man paralyzed. Jones originally faced two felony charges of coercion from the incident. Jones ultimately pleaded no contest to a gross misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct and received a one-year suspended jail sentence.

But that was only one of many times that Jones found himself in trouble with the law. He is believed to have been arrested at least eight times since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2005.

Jones, then playing for the Titans, had already been arrested for assault in 2005, a felony count of obstruction in 2006 and disorderly conduct and public intoxication later in 2006 before the strip club incident in 2007. As a result, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell handed down a one-year suspension to Jones in 2007 for repeated violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

Jones was traded to the Cowboys in 2008, but was suspended again, this time for six games, during that season for an alleged scuffle with his bodyguard in October of that year. Jones was cut by the Cowboys after that year and did not play in the NFL in 2009.

The cornerback has been with the Bengals since 2010. He was arrested for assault in 2013 and later that year was reportedly cited for disorderly conduct.

In his six years in Cincinnati he has played in 82 games (43 starts) and made 10 interceptions.
