JACK CALLAGHAN, owner of Missile Man, said he would not have asked for Paul John to ride his horse if his trainer Jim Best had told him he thought the conditional was weak, not fit and incompetent.

That was how the Lewes trainer had described John after his ride on Echo Brava at Plumpton four days before Missile Man’s run at Towcester.

Callaghan, a self-made businessman who sold his companies and worked for a top American aviation company for 12 years, has eight horses with Best.

When asked about John’s evidence that Best had told him Missile Man was out for a run and was having three runs before dropping into a seller, Callghan ridiculed the suggestion.

‘No logic in it’

“There is no logic I can see in it,” Callaghan said. I wouldn’t have agreed to doing something like that. I bought him for £35,000 out of Ireland and after his bumper win could have sold him for more.

“Why would I want to put him in a seller where he could have been bought for £3,000 – I don’t need the £3,000. I bought the top lot at Tattersalls last year for 185,000 guineas.”

Best is answering three charges, the first two over whether he breached Rule C45 in the running of Echo Brava at Plumpton on December 14th last year and Missile Man at Towcester four days later.

He additionally faces a charge under Rule (A) 30 of acting prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct and good reputation of racing.

John faces two charges of failing to ride Echo Brava and Missile Man on their merits.
