Union members voted to strike on two of the biggest betting days of year

NEGOTIATIONS began on Friday to try to resolve a dispute between members of the Unite trade union and bookmakers Sean Graham after union members voted for strike action on two days of the Cheltenham Festival.

Union members voted to strike on Stan James Champion Hurdle day and Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup day, two of the biggest betting days of the year, with their dispute centred around pay levels and security.

Brendan Mulgrew, spokesman for Sean Graham, told the Racing Post on Friday: “Negotiations took place today [at the Labour Relations Agency in Belfast], but there is no definite outcome yet.

“I would like to stress that Sean Graham have always been willing to enter negotiations and to say that of the 50 staff who are in the union, 40 of them voted for strike action.

“That represents approximately 25 per cent of the overall staff employed.”

He added: “We are absolutely committed to a resolution of the dispute.”

‘Issues repeatedly highlighted’

Unite official Davy McMurray, quoted in the Belfast Telegraph, said: “Following a 100 per cent rejection of a management pay offer that would have left our members on the minimum wage payable under UK law, Unite balloted our members on their willingness to take industrial action.

“The unanimous result in support of taking strike action highlights the strength of feeling among our members and their determination to secure a living wage. Unite has repeatedly highlighted issues of concern for our members at Sean Graham bookies, who are overwhelmingly composed of female workers.”

Issues at the heart of the strike, McMurray said, included “personal security concerns over the absence of protective barriers” in shops, as well as “the absence of overtime rates or compensation for unsocial working hours”.

He added: “Even at this stage it isn’t too late for management to avoid unnecessary disruption by bringing forward a living wage pay proposal addressing the legitimate expectations of their valuable staff.”

McMurray said staff ran the risk of robbery, along with other dangers to their personal safety.
