HARRY FRY has declared two horses at different ends of the experience scale for Saturday’s BetBright Chase at Kempton with novice chaser Thomas Brown and former winner Opening Batsman in the final field of 16.

The trainer won the Grade 3 contest with a novice in 2013 when Opening Batsman scored off an official rating of 140 and he has issued Thomas Brown the same task.

“We’ve been keen to run Thomas Brown off his mark in a good handicap and with the ground drying out we thought we’d take our chance,” said Fry.

The seven-year-old was a smart novice hurdler and he has transferred that ability over fences, winning two of his three chase starts to date.

“He’s going the right way and we always thought he’d make a better chaser so hopefully he’ll prove us right,” Fry added. “He will have learned more from his last run when winning at Doncaster and we’ve got the cheekpieces back on to help him concentrate and travel through the race.”

‘Drying ground a big positive’

Following his victory three years ago, Opening Batsman took two years to return to the winner’s enclosure and a trio of efforts this season have been compromised by the ground.

“He’s back on the mark he won the race on and the drying ground will be a big positive for him,” said Fry. “He didn’t handle the ground last time but the time before at Kempton’s Christmas meeting he ran a really good race and just didn’t get home in the conditions.”

With Noel Fehily booked for 9-1 shot Thomas Brown, Fry has turned to conditional jockey Liam McKenna to ride Opening Batsman, who is as big as 20-1.

The trainer added: “With Liam taking off a handy 7lb, he has a featherweight and goes there in good form.”

Champion trainer runs three

Last year’s winner Rocky Creek forms part of a three-pronged attack from Paul Nicholls, who is also responsible for topweight Virak and Ruben Cotter.

Ladbrokes have Champagne West and Ziga Boy as their 5-1 joint-favourites with Sandown-specialist Le Reve, second 12 months ago, next best at 6-1.

The ground at Kempton was on Thursday described as good to soft, soft in places and with the forecast for bright but cold weather, frost covers have been put down on all takeoff and landing areas.
