Hong Kong: Able Friend’s recent troubles escalated on Thursday after trainer John Moore revealed the brilliant miler has suffered an injury setback.

The giant chestnut had to overcome a late injury scare before finishing third to Maurice in last month’s Longines Hong Kong Mile and he pulled up sore following trackwork on Monday.

An MRI scan showed a strained deep digital flexor tendon in Able Friend’s troublesome right front foot and Moore will request the horse be sent to Australia for a long period of rest and rehabilitation.

“He is done for the season, he is out,” the trainer told the South China Morning Post.

“He went into the Hong Kong Mile with a bruised sole, we kept him in minor work and the problem didn’t resolve itself.

“We got the scans back, got the bad news and now we have to put him aside. It’s very disappointing to have one of the top five horses in the world and to have him sidelined.”

Rare injury

Moore would not be drawn on whether the latest setback would spell the end of Able Friend’s celebrated career.

“I’ve never seen this injury before, so I can’t tell you,” he said. “He is a 1,300-pound animal, so that may be a factor. We just have to get him in a paddock and give him some rehab. Most of all, we need to let the injury cure itself in a nice paddock.”

Maurice, who won the Hong Kong Mile under Ryan Moore, has been named Japan’s Horse of the Year for 2015 after claiming three Group 1 victories in an unbeaten six-race sequence.
