DOUVAN put in a flawless round of jumping on his way to winning his second Grade 1 over fences, extending his unbeaten sequence to seven for Willie Mullins.

He is now as short as 1-2, and a best-priced 8-13 with Betway, for the Racing Post Arkle, making him the shortest-priced ante-post favourite for the Cheltenham Festival.

Douvan is the latest superstar off the Mullins production line and his trainer was delighted by the demolition job. He said: “He jumped fantastic and I was very impressed with him. He hurdles his fences and there’s no effort to it.

“He has a temperament like a good pony, he’s so docile and you can put him anywhere in a race, he doesn’t have to make the running. He’s just a different species.”

Asked how good he thought he was, Mullins replied: “I don’t know. I’ve yet to see anything that can give him a race. He could be absolutely anything. He has the ability to go back over hurdles and win a Champion Hurdle, let’s hope he pass the test coming up in six weeks time.”

Douvan’s presence had scared off plenty of potential opponents and he dispatched his only two rivals with the minimum of fuss, beating Velvet Maker by 15 lengths with Domesday Book a further 13 lengths back in third.

Ruby Walsh sent 1-14 favourite Douvan straight into an early lead and the result was never in any doubt as last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner put in some brilliant leaps on his way to an easy success.

‘Quickened up smartly’

Douvan’s performance impressed Walsh, who said: “He was very good. He was so accurate with his jumping. He just bends his knees, lifts his shoulders and doesn’t delay in the air. He did it very well. He quickened up smartly from the last.”

Douvan was by no means hard pressed and Walsh feels there is plenty more to come, adding: “He took a long time to pull up, which is always a good sign, that’s what you look for. It’s not so much how far they win, it’s what they do after the line. The ones that stop quickly have usually had enough, the ones you can’t pull up have plenty left in the tank.”

Festival favourite

Douvan will contest the Racing Post Arkle at the Festival, where he will be tasked with emulating Un De Sceaux who took that race having run out a wide-margin winner at Leopardstown.

When comparing the duo, Walsh said: “He’s a fraction easier ride. Whether he was as impressive as Un De Sceaux this day last year I don’t know, but I’d say there was plenty under the bonnet.”

Douvan, who will once again form part of an incredibly strong Willie Mullins raiding party, has won all three starts over fences this season.

WILLIE MULLINS’ seemingly endless supply of talented young novices can now count A Toi Phil among their number after an impressive display under Bryan Cooper which saw his price cut to 20-1 (from 25) by Paddy Power for the Neptune, while Sky Bet went 14-1 (from 20) for the Deloitte Novice Hurdle.

Mullins said: “He’s learning and maturing all the time. He raced like a racehorse today. He’s a very accurate jumper and can go out in trip to 3m without a problem.

“I imagine he’ll be entered in all of the novice hurdles at Cheltenham, but the Neptune or Albert Bartlett would be the preferred options, we’ll keep our options open.”
