KATIE WALSH failed in her bid to win the Australian Grand National at Ballarat on Sunday when her mount I’ll’ava’alf was brought down at the final fence when out of contention.

Walsh, who was also brought down on an earlier ride on the card, was bidding to emulate the achievement of her brother Ruby, who had won the showpiece race last season on Bashboy.

Victory in the marathon contest, which was run in testing conditions, went to 2014 hero Wells, who regained the title he had first claimed when beating Bashboy two years ago.

Comeback kid

A potentially career-threatening injury prevented had prevented Wells from defending his crown last year but he clearly retains plenty of ability and stayed on powerfully to register a wide-margin success under rider Richard Cully.

Craig Durden, representing trainer Kathryn Durden, said: “The year off might have helped him a bit because he’s been a lot more mature. He’s coped with things a lot better this time around.

“He’s a superior stayer, a great stayer. When he gets out to a genuine test he comes into his own. He’s an amazing horse, a great jumper and great to be a part of.

“I never doubted the horse would come back…when they are special like he is you give them the time.”
