Deauville: Poule D’Essai Des Poulains (Group 1) 1m, 3yo colts

ZARAK carries more than just Christophe Soumillon on to the Deauville straight, with a genetic inheritance and two racecourse appearances suggesting Alain de Royer-Dupre may have in his care a colt with a decent share of the freakish talent possessed by his mother Zarkava.

Royer-Dupre elected to bypass the traditional trials in favour of a conditions race at Maisons-Laffitte to give Zarak experience of a straight mile, where he got the better of a battle with the highly regarded George Patton.

The trainer said: “He goes on all kinds of ground and has made plenty of progress since his comeback. He’s accelerated well in his two races to date but we need to see him up against this opposition now. The level of the three-year-old colts is difficult to determine.”

O’Brien bidding for another success

Aidan O’Brien won this race three times between 2002 and 2007 at Longchamp and seeks to add to that record with The Gurkha, who lost his maiden tag at the second attempt by a yawning nine lengths at Navan last month and was supplemented for this race on Thursday.

He said: “The Gurkha is in good form. While he’s only won a maiden and it’s a big step up, we’ve been happy with him since that win at Navan. He’s a Galileo, but has plenty of pace.”

At the opposite end of the scale with regard to experience is the Richard Fahey-trained Birchwood, whose seventh and final appearance at two came when run down late by Hit It A Bomb in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Horris Hill winner Crazy Horse will, like Birchwood, be making his seasonal reappearance, while the third British representative, First Selection, faded into seventh in the 2,000 Guineas after cutting out the early running.
