Kings XI Punjab won the toss and opted to bat on a hot afternoon in Mohali. M Vijay explained that the home side wanted to make first use of good batting conditions to set the game up. His Sunrisers Hyderabad counterpart, David Warner, did not seem too perturbed, claiming that he would have chosen to bowl first in any case.

Kings XI brought in right-arm medium pacer Anureet Singh in place of legspinner KC Cariappa. Sunrisers made two changes, most notably dropping the out-of-form Kane Williamson in favour of Australian allrounder Ben Cutting, who will play his first match of the season. Barinder Sran made way for legspinner Karn Sharma.

A loss today will vanquish whatever narrow chances Kings XI have of qualifying for the playoffs. Sunrisers, on the other hand, are sitting pretty at the top of the table and are just one win away from sealing a playoffs berth.
