LUMIERE and Buratino are on track for their Classic assignments at Newmarket after taking part in a morning gallop at Haydock on Monday.

Trainer Mark Johnston took six horses on the awayday and his two leading contenders for the season’s opening Classics galloped separately with two work companions over a mile.

Cheveley Park winner Lumiere, who was ridden in her work by William Buick, is 5-1 second favourite behind the Aidan O’Brien-trained Fillies’ Mile winner Minding for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas on May 1.

Buratino, who became the only horse to defeat Qipco 2,000 Guineas favourite Air Force Blue when taking the Coventry at Royal Ascot, finished third to the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt in the Dewhurst in October and was partnered by James Doyle in advance of his April 30 date at Newmarket.

Johnston said yesterday: “Both are well on target and have had a couple of gallops at home before this morning.

“Everything has been good and it has always been my policy to take the horses away to a course for a gallop or two if they are going straight to the Guineas.”

The public might get the chance to see the two leading contenders again as they could finish their preparations with a gallop on the Rowley Mile during the Craven meeting in two weeks’ time.

Trainer confident of Lumiere’s stamina

Johnston won the 2,000 Guineas with Mister Baileys in 1994 on his seasonal return and worked the oracle with Attraction in the 1,000 Guineas after the filly had not raced since winning the previous summer’s Cherry Hinton at Newmarket’s July meeting.

Johnston, reporting Lumiere starting to shed her winter coat, added: “We’re ahead of the game, knowing we had to be ready for any possible hold-ups, but everything has gone well.”

Addressing the issue of Lumiere stepping up to a mile after her Cheveley Park win over six furlongs, Johnston added: “I’m pretty confident about her staying. If you didn’t know her form or pedigree you’d say she looked more a middle-distance horse – she is big and rangy.

“She was also more relaxed this morning – she tended to be keen in her races last year.”
