PETER MOODY ended his training career on Thursday in typically bombastic style by capturing the Group 1 William Reid Stakes with Flamberge, his final runner before he starts a six-month ban from racing from which he plans no return.

Moody was last week found guilty of unintentionally administering the banned substance cobalt to a horse in his care and, having initially stated his plans to come back better than ever, the trainer of the legendary sprinter Black Caviar decided against returning at all.

‘It’s been an emotional day’

Instead it was left to Flamberge to bring down the curtain on Moody’s career as he whizzed around the inside rail under the floodlights at Moonee Valley to pip Holler by a short head with Japonisme the same distance away in third.

“That makes it impossible to come back because that can’t be bettered,” Moody said. “It’s not the ideal circumstances to finish your career with a little bit of murky water there but to take that Group 1 home tonight is pretty special.”

The win was greeted with scenes of great emotion from Moody’s supporters with his wife Sarah and three daughters in tears along with many of the trainer’s former staff.

“What a great way to go out. That’ll stick with me for a while,” Moody added, speaking to Racing.com. “I’ll probably get in my car and have a cry but I’m not going to do it in front of you b******s [in the media] – my eyes are watering up as it is. It’s been an emotional day.”
