Yoenis Cespedes is going to eat that $7,000 pig

[ad_1]

Yoenis Cespedes’ not-so-little piggy is off to the butcher.

The outfielder confirmed Wednesday that the hog’s days were numbered, telling reporters that the swine would be sent to slaughter.

A day earlier, the Mets said that Cespedes had no plans to kill the prized 275-pound porker, but that was apparently semantics: The team meant that Cespedes wouldn’t do it himself. According to a source, the Mets were concerned about any possible backlash that might come with revealing Cespedes’ plan for the animal.

Cespedes forked over $7,000 for the pig, buying it at the Saint Lucie County Fair.

There was little doubt that he had anything but dinner in mind when he bought the pig — a hype video that the Cuban made when he was showcasing his skills for MLB teams includes a scene where he roasts a hog on a spit over hot coals.

As one can imagine, PETA expressed disappointment with Cespedes’ decision to send the pig to a butcher.

“Yoenis Céspedes can afford $7,000 out of his own pocket, and this loving, loyal, and clever pig is paying the real price with his life,” PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in a statement. “It’s a shame that Céspedes dropped the ball here and missed the opportunity to send this pig to a sanctuary, where he could have lived out his days in peace. We’re sending Céspedes some delicious vegan bacon in the hope that he’ll open his heart, not clog it with pig fat.”
