RICHARD JOHNSON, champion jockey-in-waiting after finishing second to Sir Anthony McCoy 16 times, racked up his first ever double century in a season with a determined ride on Cheat The Cheater at Warwick on Friday.

Johnson has also reached 3,000 career wins as he charges towards a maiden jockeys’ title and he brought up another milestone with a never-say-die performance in the saddle to go 85 winners clear of his nearest challenger Aidan Coleman.

“To get 200 has been amazing, I’d be here all day trying to thank everyone who gave me rides,” he said.

“The support I’ve had from racegoers all around the country has been amazing. I’m lucky I ride fancied horses on a daily basis at the moment.

“Champion jockey has always been my goal and it’s taken me a long time to get there. Two hundred is an extra bonus, [but] the championship was always the number one ambition.

“People say I’m always smiling but after the season I’ve had if I wasn’t smiling I never would.”

Never-say-die ride

Johnson was forced to wait five days for the landmark success and it looked like the search might go on as the Claire Dyson-trained nine-year-old started to backtrack before the turn for home.

Cheat-the-cheater

Cheat The Cheater: needed plenty of encouragement from Johnson

However, Cheat The Cheater, who has completed in each of his 27 races, is a horse known for needing plenty of stoking and as leader Glendermot started to flag he got a second wind and responded to Johnson’s urgings to run out an ultimately comfortable winner.

“It’s a bit of a relief to get to 200 as I had a few days off at the beginning of the week and had a few seconds when I switched from Ludlow to Doncaster [on Wednesday],” the jockey added.

“I must say a big thanks to Philip Hobbs and my agent Dave Roberts as Philip is very loyal even through injury and most trainers will tell you that Dave is the first on the phone in the morning and the last on the phone at night.

“The plan now is to ride as many winners as possible and with a big two months coming up.”

In his previous best season in 2003-04 Johnson rode 186 winners to finish behind McCoy, who partnered 209. McCoy passed the double century nine times en route to his 20 jockeys’ titles and posted 289 winners in his most prolific campaign.
