Mets closer Familia: Mejia has to 'pay' for PED mistakes

PORT ST. LUCIE — Even one of Jenrry Mejia’s biggest supporters seems exasperated by the pitcher’s third positive performance-enhancing drug test.

A week after Mejia received baseball’s first lifetime ban under the current drug policy, Jeurys Familia said that when anyone breaks the rules he has to pay the price — even a friend.

“It’s tough for me, because he is my friend, he still is my friend,” the Mets closer said of Mejia, one of his closest pals on the team. “I don’t know what he did, but everybody knows when you do something wrong you have to pay.”

HARPER: BY KEEPING MEJIA, METS FLUNKED TEST OF THEIR OWN

Familia said he had not yet spoken to Mejia, who told reporters in the Dominican he planned to appeal the ban. He cannot do so until a year after the suspension and he must serve at least two years.

“I am trying to give it some days, give him some time so he can deal with it,” Familia said.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR METS HEADING INTO SPRING TRAINING

Mejia tested positive for anabolic steroids three times within 11 months — this time for Boldenone.

Familia took over the Mets’ closer role when Mejia was initially suspended during the first week of the 2015 season. He racked up 43 saves in the regular season and five in the playoffs.

The big 26-year-old righthander did not record a save in four appearances in the World Series, however. Like pretty much every other player in camp, Familia said that experience is what’s driving him to get back and win the World Series in 2016.

“This time I think everybody just trying to go back and win the World Series,” Familia said.

The Mets were concerned that Familia fatigued in the playoffs after pitching 79 innings in the regular season.

Familia’s workload will be monitored early in the year similar to the plan the Mets will use with their starters, Terry Collins said. The Mets manager said Familia was the biggest surprise of the 2015 success and they will not risk him to a heavy workload.
