L’Ami Serge: surprise defeat has not ruled him out the Arkle

NICKY HENDERSON on Sunday stressed that L’Ami Serge’s prospects of running in the Racing Post Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival remain alive despite his unexpected defeat at Warwick on Saturday.

The trainer said initial checks on the horse in the wake of his defeat by Violet Dancer in the Kingmaker Novices’ Chase had come back clear.

“We haven’t ruled out anything,” said Henderson. “He scoped 100 per cent after the race, he’s been out this morning and he is bright, sound as a pound, healthy and looks great.”

In the wake of L’Ami Serge’s defeat at long odds-on, Anthony Bromley, racing manager for owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, suggested the Arkle was no longer under consideration and bookies pushed him out to 14-1 (from 7) for the race. He is a best-priced 16-1 with Ladbrokes.

Henderson added: “What went wrong? Who knows, I’m short of ideas. We will check everything else but there isn’t an awful lot else to check. That’s not him, we know that. He wasn’t going to get there at any stage. He was flat. We will keep everybody posted.”

L’Ami Serge, sent off at 1-5 , lost his unbeaten record over fences at Warwick with a surprisingly lacklustre performance.

Douvan is hot favourite for the Arkle at a best-priced 4-9.
