WWE champion Daniel Bryan is retiring from wrestling due to a concussion.

The three-time WWE World Heavyweight champion has battled injuries throughout his career, but a concussion during a six-man tag match has left him out of the sport since the spring. Shortly after the concussion, Bryan told “Sports Illustrated” that he was working to get back to competing.

“I’m trying. I don’t want to push, push, push,” he said. “I’ve made my statement to WWE, but they’re going to listen to their doctors.”

Bryan was not cleared to return to wrestling by WWE doctors.

Although he was most recently given permission to continue wrestling by doctors at UCLA in January, WWE still has not cleared Bryan as safe for competition.

After he previously attempted to leave the WWE in a suspected effort to wrestle elsewhere, the organization told Bryan it would not grant his resignation because his contract was frozen due to the injury. He did “give notice (to WWE) and was told he did not have the right to give notice,” Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline confirmed.

Bryan won one World Heavyweight Championship and created the “Yes!” movement that swept the wrestling world. His 17-year professional wrestling career comes to an end with this announcement of his immediate retirement.
