Knicks target Mike Conley: Everything's on the table as FA

Mike Conley Jr. plans to explore all of his options in free agency.

Mike Conley Jr. will be the top free agent at New York’s position of need next summer, and despite the rumblings that he would never leave Memphis and buddy Marc Gasol, the point guard acknowledged the Knicks will be an option.

“I think everything will be on the table when the time comes,” he said when asked about his link to New York. “I haven’t committed to anything.”

Phil Jackson will have to get creative if he wants to go after Conley or Kevin Durant with a max contract. As constituted, the Knicks won’t have enough space even if Arron Afflalo and Derrick Williams decline their player options worth a combined $12.5 million.

ISOLA: WHAT’S THE POINT? KNICKS NEED BACKCOURT HELP

Conley has played his entire nine-year career in Memphis, not far from where he grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The 28-year-old was instrumental in getting Gasol to re-sign with the Grizzlies last summer, leaving the impression that there was an agreement between the teammates about Conley’s free agency.

Conley refuted that Friday.

“No, there’s no pact,” he said.

“We’ve grown up together in this league, me and Marc, with the Grizzlies,” Conley added. “We don’t know anything different. So just as he did last year, it’s something I’m going to wait and talk about later. Because at the end of the day it is a business and anything can happen. But obviously they know how I feel about Marc and my teammates.”

Conley is one of the best players in the NBA not to be named to an All-Star team, a snub perhaps related to playing in a small market. Whether the soft-spoken and unassuming Conley craves attention is unclear, but he wouldn’t dismiss New York just because the big city is not what he’s accustomed to.

“I think that I am a small-town dude but at the same time anything is possible,” he said. “You don’t really know until you go through that kind of situation. In the offseason, wherever I’m blessed to be at, I’m going to make the best of it, whether it’s big market or small market.”

Keeping his options open is obviously the best move for Conley and he’s right in repeating “anything can happen.” The Grizzlies are frontrunners to re-sign him and can pay Conley more money than the competition, but they also seem to be on the backend of a long run that peaked in 2013 with a spot in the Western Conference finals.

Depending on what happens in the playoffs, it wouldn’t be shocking if ownership wants to press the reset button by allowing their free agents (Conley, Jeff Green, Courtney Lee, Mario Chalmers and Matt Barnes) to walk.
