Australia: Michelle Payne will not ride Prince Of Penzance when the Melbourne Cup winner reappears in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield at the end of the month.

Payne created history when partnering Prince of Penzance to Melbourne Cup glory last year, becoming the first female rider to win ‘the race that stops a nation’, but the horse’s owners said that they believe she is not yet fit enough after suffering serious injuries in a crushing fall at Mildura in May.

“The horse will be running in the Memsie Stakes and she won’t be riding,” part-owner John Richards told racing.com.

“That is the major reason, that she is not race fit and we have concerns over her wellbeing.”

‘I’m done’

Payne, who has not ridden in a race since the fall and reportedly returned to riding out two weeks ago, seemingly reacted angrily to the news.

In a message on Twitter that was subsequently deleted, she wrote: “Not anymore I’m done, why work your arse off for people who don’t appreciate what you do and write you off anyway #moretolife.”

Payne made worldwide headlines after becoming the first woman to ride the Melbourne Cup winner and famously told her doubters to “get stuffed”.

“It’s such a chauvinistic sport, a lot of the owners wanted to kick me off,” she said. “Everyone else can get stuffed [who] think women aren’t good enough.”

Payne, who was urged to turn her back on riding by her brother after her serious fall, hopes to combine riding with training and is in possession of a dual jockey-trainer licence and has bought a farm in Ballarat, Victoria, with the intention of establishing a yard.

The owners of Prince Of Penzance have yet to confirm who will ride the horse in the Memsie Stakes, or whether Payne will be considered for the ride in the Melbourne Cup.
