BRIAN HUGHES, one of two riders singled out by the BHA for praise having not collected a single whip suspension in 2015, has nevertheless urged the sport’s governing body to increase the number of times a jump jockey can use the stick from eight to ten.

When reporting the complete statistics for last year’s whip offences, the BHA noted two of the year’s five leading jump jockeys had finished on December 31 without having incurred a whip ban for at least 12 months.

One of those was Sam Twiston-Davies and the other was Hughes, who still believes work needs to be done to improve the rules, whereby a stewards’ review is triggered if a jump jockey hits a horse eight times. The equivalent number on the Flat is seven.

‘Ridiculous’

Hughes said: “I think it’s a bit ridiculous we’re only allowed one extra hit in a three-mile chase in deep ground at Haydock or Sandown compared to a sprint or mile race on the Flat. It’s just not realistic.

“That needs adjusting and if they relaxed the guideline number to ten hits you would see even fewer bans.

“I’m not really a stick jockey and never have been. I have gone over the limit a few times in the past but I’m someone who picks up the stick as a last resort because I know suspensions are costly.”

Behaviour not changing

Hughes also claimed jockeys are not behaving differently in major races, thereby challenging data that shows the number of riders penalised for whip use after winning top-flight races in 2015 doubled from five to ten.

The most high-profile of those was Paddy Brennan, who was suspended for 11 days and fined £4,200 after hitting Cue Card 16 times in the William Hill King George VI Chase.

“In general I don’t think jockeys are being harder on horses in big races,” added Hughes.

“I think on the whole the changes to the whip rules have been generally positive. If the whip is used in the high teens that’s stupidity. Jockeys who use the whip that many times will be punished and they deserve to be punished.”
